Leanne Barrett: Writing & Illustration

Writing & Illustration

Writing:
I review picture books, board books and non-fiction books for Kids' Book Review, see my reviews here.

I am currently working on writing several picture books including one inspired by my little Australian Terrier, Jay.

I have been working on my craft and developing my voice by attending various Society of Children Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and ACT Writers Centre workshops.

I am a member of the online writing course Scribbles by Jen Storer and I participate in NaNoWriMo.

I have worked as a Copywriter for Forward To The Future. And in 2019 I was a Roving Reporter for the SCBWI Conference in Sydney.

Illustrating:
This journey began in late 2016 when I made a decision to rediscover my passion for drawing and painting. The first step was participating in the 2017 52-Week Illustration Challenge, created by Tania McCartney

The journey continued by attending intuitive painting classes with Sylvia Marris, displaying my illustrations in my first exhibition, Story Timehosted by SCBWI and participating in online classes by Nina Rycroft.

Most of my illustrations are delicate watercolour illustrations with ink outlines. They feature landscapes, trees, animals, babies and adventurous hens that are sometimes accompanied by a whimsical duck. If you take a closer look at my natural world and landscape illustrations, you might see a bee or ladybird, they seem to find their way intuitively into many of my illustrations.

Pop over to my Art Gallery page to see some of my illustrations or visit my shop where you can purchase some of my illustrations, cards and giclee prints.

Many thanks to my local SCBWI group and friends in The Duck Pond
(see Girl and Duck) who have inspired and encouraged me.
You are a wonderful supportive group of children's book creators.
