Leanne Barrett: Writing & Illustration

Writing & Illustration

I review picture books, board books and non-fiction books for Kids' Book Review, see my reviews here.

I am currently working on writing a picture book inspired by my little Australian Terrier, Jay.

Early in 2017 I began to develop a younger reader chapter book. The character was born during Cate Whittle's workshop on Creating Characters and I began to write the story in earnest during NaNoWriMo.

To develop my story writing craft I have attended various Society of Children Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and ACT Writers Centre workshops. In late 2017 I joined the online writing course Scribbles by Jen Storer

In 2018 I began doing work as a Copywriter for Forward To The Future

In 2019 I was a Roving Reporter for the SCBWI Conference in Sydney.

In 2016 I made a decision to rediscover my passion for drawing and painting. My journey and exploration began in th first week of 2017 when I joined the 52-Week Illustration Challenge, created by Tania McCartney

Later in the year (2017) I started attending intuitive painting classes with Sylvia Marris. Intuitive painting pushes me to discover and create using mediums and techniques that I don't naturally choose.

In early 2017 I joined SCBWI, which presented me with an opportunity to display illustrations in my first exhibition, Story Time. My exhibition illustrations feature animals and often include my adventurous hens and my whimsical duck.

In 2018 I joined the Nina Rycroft online classes to help me bring more of my illustrated characters to life. See my Art Gallery page to see some of my new illustrations that feature in my cards and giclee prints.

Many thanks to my local SCBWI group and friends in The Duck Pond
(see Girl and Duck) who have inspired and encouraged me.
You are a wonderful supportive group of children's book creators.
