Leanne Barrett: About Me

About Me

I am, Leanne Barrett, an avid reader, art lover, writer and mother to a university student. I developed a passion for picture books - especially illustrations - during my university years. I can often be found in the bookshop browsing the picture book section.

Promotion of literature is very important to me and I love attending book launches and supporting local writers and illustrators. With a BEd (Primary School) and a MEd (Teacher Librarianship). I have reviewed books for Kids' Book Review and Reading Time.

I have been a stay-at-home mum, a relief primary school teacher, teacher librarian, Landcare volunteer, volunteer guide at the National Gallery of Australia, genealogist and I spent 5 years volunteering for The Children’s Book Council of Australia ACT Branch holding the positions of Author/Illustrator Visits Coordinator and President.

I am member of the ACT Writers Centre and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. My creative exploration in 2017 has turned into a full-time career choice of writing and creating art. In early 2018 completed the Nina Rycoft Picture Book Illustration On-line Course and the 2018 Sketchbook Revival.

My creative work and exploration...

  • drawing and painting
  • writing both fiction and non-fiction
  • viewing art with my friends
  • talking about art with colleagues
To find out more about this see my blog.

I like to;
  • read adult historical fiction and fantasy and I adore reading children's picture books.
  • attend all manner of lectures and talks - as I love to learn
  • go to art exhibitions and movies
  • listen to music
  • sing and play the piano (badly)

Artist Statement:

Leanne Barrett is a writer and aspiring illustrator. She has been an art tour guide and a Teacher Librarian. Leanne has attended art classes in life drawing, pottery and intuitive painting.

Her illustrations explore the natural world and the rural landscape. Leanne’s first exhibition, Story Time, introduce her illustrations that portray animals in a whimsical style. These illustrations were created using ink line work and then hand coloured with watercolours, ink and acrylic paint pens.

Leanne sees her art as a journey to happiness and place of peace where she reconnects to her inner child.
